Yahoo Receives Bad Letter From Republicans

The big IT companies are always in the focus of politics, most recently the US Congress has examined and taken various steps that are intended to limit the power of Google, Facebook, and Apple. Sometimes the bosses get letters – but not always the right ones.

In the USA, the process of coming to terms with the events of January 6, 2021, is still ongoing: At that time, an angry mob of Donald Trump’s fans stormed the US parliament, the Capitol. The issue concerns both political camps and a group of eleven Republican MPs has now written angry letters to 13 IT companies or their bosses.

As Engadget reports, they threaten companies with legal consequences if they fail to comply with the request. Specifically, it is about the release of documents with which one wants to find out what role IT companies and social media played in the storming of the Capitol.

“Newland”

Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter, and US network operators have received such a letter. The Republican politicians have apparently found their own personal new territory because one does not necessarily demonstrate a very high level of expertise or they have a level of knowledge that would have been relevant years ago. For example, there is a lack of social media channels such as Reddit, Telegram, and TikTok.

The MPs allow themselves the biggest faux pas in their letter to Yahoo because this is addressed to Marissa Mayer. Mayer was actually once CEO of Yahoo, but that was only the case until 2017.

That doesn’t exactly cast a good light on the digital competence of politicians and their employees, because a simple Google search would certainly have quickly resolved the matter. But when you consider that such people make laws, then you can certainly get concerns.
