You Won’t Get End-to-End Encryption on Facebook Until 2022

Over the past few years, Facebook has faced plenty of criticism. There were many reasons for users to dislike the social media giant, but this time we are talking about one of its privacy factors – end-to-end encryption.

So back in 2016, Facebook rolled out this end-to-end (E2E) encryption for its Messenger app (it is active only when a user switches to a ‘Secret Conversation’ mode). Instagram doesn’t have one. The parent company said in 2019 that it would add E2E encryption to Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram. But we are not getting this E2E encryption by 2020.

In a recent blog post, Facebook said:

“While we expect to make more progress on default end-to-end encryption for Messenger and Instagram Direct this year, it’s a long-term project and we won’t be fully end-to-end encrypted until sometime in 2022 at the earliest. Moreover, the safety features we’ve already introduced are designed to work with end-to-end encryption, and we plan to continue building strong safety features into our services.”

I am not judging, but does it not sound strange for a company that big that first announced to add E2E encryption in 2019, is now saying that they won’t be able to fully add the E2E feature.

Taking advantage of this situation when Facebook and WhatsApp are not paying serious attention to users’ privacy, Signal and Telegram are capturing the lost users from the former tech giant.
