YouTube & Tribeca Are Running A Free Film Festival

With conventional film festivals off the table to limit COVID-19 spread for now, some are turning to YouTube to shine a spotlight on films. Tribeca Enterprises has collaborated with the company for a free online showcase that includes films, shorts, documentaries, music, comedy and festival-wide interviews.

We Are One: A Global Film Festival is called the virtual festival and will run from May 29th to June 7th. The video pages will provide links to donations to support the World Health Organization and local relief efforts at COVID-19. All “new and classic” movies will be on sale, organizers told the Hollywood Reporter, but it’s not clear if We Are One will contain premieres that were earmarked for festivals that were delayed or cancelled. The full lineup is later to be announced.

Films from Tribeca’s online edition will be free to watch, along with those selected from other major festivals such as Sundance, Cannes, Venice and Toronto. Other participants include the BFI London Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival as well as those in Tokyo, Berlin, Sydney, Karlovy Vary, San Sebastian and Mumbai.

Tribeca has also made some of its programming available for online streaming, including shorts and experiments of virtual reality. Meanwhile, South by Southwest partnered up with Amazon to stream some of their movies on Prime Video starting today for free. Although streaming won’t fully replace film festivals, it will help many filmmakers at least see their work before physical festivals are up and running again.
