Firefox 140 update comes with a custom search engine and tabs

Firefox 140 starts several innovative functions for more control and efficiency: The new tab discover can save system resources, vertical attached tabs can be flexibly adapted and the all-sided translation is now working much faster.

More control over system resources

But that’s not all. Mozilla has Firefox 140.0 released And now introduces one of the most useful innovations of recent times: the possibility of “unloading” tabs without closing them. The function is available by right-clicking on one or more tabs and reduces memory and CPU consumption to one click. Unhanged tabs remain visible, but are marked with a gray symbol.

This function proves to be valuable if the computer is short of RAM or a website consumes excessive many resources. While other browsers offer similar functions, Mozilla has optimized this solution for Firefox users, because unloaded tabs are reactivated immediately the next click.

Improved vertical tabs

Firefox 140 also improves for users of vertical tabs. The area for attached tabs can be quickly adjusted by pulling a divider. In this way, users can keep an eye on more or less attached tabs and optimally use the space. The new version also contains a simplified way to add custom search engines. With right click on a search field and selection of “Add search engine”, the search function can now be easily integrated. Alternatively, users can manually enter a search URL in the settings under “Search”.

Faster translations

The total pages were optimized. Instead of translating the entire page immediately, Firefox 140 prioritizes the visible area. Contents outside the screen section are only translated when scrolling. This change accelerates the translation process and reduces the system load. Infographic Browsermarkt: The steep climb of Google Chrome

Further changes

A change affects the pocket feature: both the toolbar symbol and the integration on the new-tab page were removed after Mozilla’s announcement of the service setting. For developers, Firefox offers 140 support for the CSS Custom Highlight API, Cookie Store API and the pointer rawupdate event. Service workers are available in private mode, which benefits websites with background tasks.
