Apple stops iOS 26.4: Downgrade from iOS 26.4.1 is no longer possible
Apple has officially stopped signing iOS 26.4. Anyone who has already installed the current update to version 26.4.1 can no longer return to the previous version of the iPhone operating system.
No turning back for iPhone users
About a week after the release of iOS 26.4.1, Apple drew a line on the server side. The Californian company no longer signs the previous operating system version iOS 26.4, which was released a good three weeks ago. What this means for users is that a downgrade to this older version of the iPhone operating system is now technically impossible.
Anyone who has installed the current update must stay with this version. When software is signed by Apple, it goes through a server-side verification check upon installation. If this digital signature is missing, the devices refuse to set up the operating system. A downgrade can therefore only be carried out as long as the time window for signing is still open.
Security and bug fixes
As MacRumors reports that by switching off the signature, the company prevents customers from using outdated and potentially insecure systems. Apple usually stops signing older versions of iOS shortly after the release of new software. One disadvantage, however, is that if there are any problems with the new firmware, it is no longer possible to take a step back. The update to iOS 26.4.1 primarily focuses on bug fixes and system stability for iPhones. Among other things, it solves annoying iCloud sync problems and repairs stolen device protection that caused malfunctions on corporate networks.
However, according to the official documents, known security gaps were not closed with the small patch. The now blocked version iOS 26.4 previously brought some major innovations to mobile devices. These included a more compact tab bar in the Safari browser, which creates more space on the screen. There were also expanded functions for the creative app Freeform as well as practical adjustments to family sharing for your own payment methods.
Next updates are already in progress
The system also introduced eight fresh emojis. These include a killer whale, a trombone, a landslide, a ballet dancer and a distorted face. Apple has been testing iOS 26.5 in a beta phase since the end of March, which will introduce additional new functions for the smartphones. Aside from mobile devices, the company also maintains its other operating systems. New beta versions of iPadOS 26.5 and tvOS 26.5 were also released last week. Here too, Apple is likely to stop signing the 26.4 version soon and prevent a downgrade.
