Galaxy Watch: Samsung is canceling support for two smartwatch models
Samsung is ending software support for two older Galaxy Watch models. After five years, the devices no longer receive security updates. Users can continue to use the watches, but have to do without new functions.
End of support for older models
While Samsung is reportedly working on a new Galaxy Watch called “Aero”, some owners of the current Ultra version recently complained about falling bezels. Now users of older smartwatch versions are also facing a problem because the Korean manufacturer has now stopped supporting two models. The Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic are affected. Samsung has released the two wearables released in 2021 from its current Security bulletin for September 2026 removed.
This means that the devices will receive neither new operating system versions nor security-relevant patches in the future. The step occurs exactly according to the manufacturer’s previously established schedule. The August 2026 update was the last software delivery for the models.
The end of updates does not mean that the watches become unusable. Inventory functions and health monitoring remain fully intact. However, users will no longer have any protection against newly discovered security gaps in the future. In addition, they are denied software innovations that will be introduced in future versions of the operating system.
Review of the Galaxy Watch 4
When Samsung’s fourth generation of watches was released, it marked an important technological change for the company. It was the first series to use the Wear OS operating system developed jointly with Google instead of the in-house software Tizen. Tizen was the foundation for the South Korean manufacturer’s wearables for many years. However, the switch to Wear OS brought with it a much larger selection of compatible apps from the Play Store. Many developers had previously focused on the Google system, which meant that third-generation Galaxy Watch users often had to do without popular third-party applications. The strategic change significantly strengthened Samsung’s market position.
With the hardware, the company also introduced the so-called BioActive sensor. For the first time, the component enabled functions such as measuring body composition, monitoring blood pressure and recording an ECG directly on the wrist. To save space in the case, engineers combined multiple measuring instruments into a single chip. The design concept was consistently developed and refined in the following generations of the smartwatch.
Upgrade for more features
For users of the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic, the question now arises about a possible change. Modern successors from the current series offer more powerful processors and expanded analysis functions for everyday life. An upgrade not only brings current safety standards back to the wrist, but also more precise sensors for recording health data.
