The US company Amazon has been blocking access to its platform for the new AI assistant Muse since Sunday evening. Users of Meta’s software receive a warning when attempting to make automated purchases. The dealer refers to a violation of the terms of use by unauthorized programs. As a typical AI agent, Muse is designed to independently take on tasks for users. This includes price comparisons, filling shopping carts and even completing the purchase. However, Amazon criticizes the fact that Meta released the tool onto the marketplace without prior consultation. The program does not identify itself as a machine when surfing and operates in secret.
Security and advertising revenue
As GeekWire reports, Amazon sees risks to privacy. The retailer fears that the program could read and save access data. Meta counters this and explains that sensitive data is protected by isolated virtual machines and a monitoring system and that, according to the developers, passwords remain secure. In addition to security aspects, financial interests play a role. Amazon generated around 59 billion euros from advertising last year. Automated purchases bypass regular product pages, meaning users no longer see sponsored articles. This endangers an important source of income for the company, which explains the move against external software.
By the way, the mail order company is not categorically against bots: Amazon certainly allows shopping bots, but sets clear conditions. Such programs must clearly identify themselves as a machine. The retailer also requires the option to refuse access. Amazon itself uses an assistant called Buy for Me that respects this. Amazon is currently taking action against unauthorized access. Last year, the company took legal action against the search engine provider Perplexity to prevent the reading of product data.
