Emergency update: WatchOS 27.0.1 for new Apple Watches is ready
Many users of the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 struggle with constant and uncontrolled restarts. An emergency update is now available with WatchOS 27.0.1 that fixes the error. Installation is recommended for all affected owners.
Emergency patch for new smartwatches
Owners of the new Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 will now receive an emergency update. Just seven days after the release of WatchOS 27, Apple made version 27.0.1 available. The update addresses a bug that led to uncontrolled crashes and subsequent restarts in the affected models. Older models do not require the current bug fix update. The unexpected restarts of wearables occurred in different everyday situations.
Affected users reported crashes when editing watch faces, during phone calls or when using Siri. A big problem was the error in recording sports activities. If the restart occurred during a training session, GPS data and training progress were often lost. Some devices even restarted in sleep mode.
Neural Engine timeout
A technical problem was responsible for the crashes. The neural engine of the smartwatches timed out. The special chip area for artificial intelligence waited longer for a response than the strict system limit of 2000 milliseconds. The result was an immediate forced restart. The Apple Watch Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4 use the manufacturer’s current S11 processor. This chip handles many requests to Siri directly on the watch without requiring an active internet connection.
However, this local data processing puts a lot of strain on the Neural Engine. If the chip was overloaded, the mechanism just mentioned intervened. The system restarted the device to prevent the software from completely freezing.
Installing WatchOS 27.0.1
The installation of the emergency update can be initiated directly via the settings of the smartwatches or via the application on the paired iPhone. Three requirements should be met for installation:
The update only fixes the error mentioned. As part of WatchOS 27.0.1, there are neither new functions nor a security-related vulnerability closed. In the official documentation There are no entries for fixed security vulnerabilities. The focus is therefore entirely on the stability of the hardware.
