Apple explains how the iPhone Duo wrinkle almost disappeared
With its first folding smartphone called the iPhone Duo, Apple solves the problem of unsightly display creases with a radical approach. A special component camouflages the kink, but requires buyers to make a clear compromise.
Focus on the iPhone Duo
At the end of October 2026, Apple will bring its first foldable smartphone onto the market. Before the release, Tom Marieb, new vice president of hardware development, spoke about technical details in an interview. John Ternus’ successor discussed the durability of the iPhone Duo, the new hinge and the often criticized display crease. A central component is the folding mechanism. According to Marieb, the team invested a lot of time fine-tuning the torque. The goal: a satisfying closing feeling, comparable to the door of a high-quality car. Even when opened halfway, the phone should be stable and not wobble.
As TechRadar reports we found out in the interview with Marieb, a lot of development work went into these mechanical properties. Marieb said the design should convey security and value to users. The hinge is designed for years of intensive use.
Fight against the display crease
Before the iPhone Duo was introduced, there were numerous rumors that Apple had completely eliminated the visible screen crease on its first foldable. However, after the official presentation it becomes clear that physics cannot be completely outwitted. The wrinkle is still there, but should be much less noticeable in everyday life. Apple wants to conceal the kink in the almost eight-inch screen with a matt nano texture. Shiny surfaces reflect more strongly, which means that unevenness in the display glass becomes noticeable more quickly.
The matte coating is intended to make the crease less visible even after prolonged use. Marieb urged the public to judge Apple by this promise. However, the choice of material has disadvantages. Matte screens reduce reflections but often provide less contrast and sharpness than glossy OLED panels. Competitors like Samsung continue to rely on glossy displays for their current folding devices. Buyers must therefore weigh up whether a less visible crease is more important to them than maximum image brilliance.
No need for protective films
Marieb also advised against additional protective films. They would cover the second generation Ceramic Shield on the front and impair image quality. Apple took a long time before entering the folding device market. According to its own statements, the company used the time to eliminate known vulnerabilities in the technology. The iPhone Duo can be pre-ordered from October 16th and is scheduled to ship from October 23rd. The starting price is 2299 euros.
