End of the GeForce RTX 5090? Nvidia’s top chip only for professional GPUs

Nvidia is said to have decided to stop producing the GeForce RTX 5090. The GB202 chip used in the top model of the current RTX 50 series for the end customer market will only be used in professional graphics cards in the future.

RTX 5090 is hardly available anymore anyway

Normal people haven’t been able to afford a GeForce RTX 5090 for a long time, after all, Nvidia’s fastest consumer graphics card is hardly available and has become extremely expensive due to demand from the AI sector. Now leak sources claim to have learned that Nvidia has even completely given up on its current top model. Of course, these are still rumors, but signs of the end of production of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 seem to be increasing. The loud one VideoCardz mostly reliable hardware leaker MEGAsizeGPU from China claims X/Twitterthat Nvidia will continue to produce the GB202 graphics chip used in the RTX 5090, but will only use it in the even more expensive graphics cards in the RTX Pro series.

The commitment to exclusive use of the GB202 in the RTX Pro graphics cards for professional users would mean the end of both the normal GeForce RTX 5090 for western markets and the reduced performance variants offered for China. However, Nvidia has neither confirmed such plans nor given a possible date for the end of production.

Rumors about 24GB version of RTX 5080

The GB202 is the largest and most powerful “Blackwell” chip that Nvidia uses in desktop graphics cards. The RTX 5090 uses a trimmed version with 21,760 CUDA cores and 32 gigabytes of GDDR7 memory. The RTX Pro 6000 uses the same chip in a variant with 24,064 CUDA cores and a full 96 gigabytes of GDDR7 memory. In addition, the GB202 is also used in the professional GPUs of the RTX Pro 5000 series. If Nvidia actually only uses the GB202 in the Pro models, there would no longer be a GPU model in the GeForce series that has the chip on board. Rumors are currently spreading that Nvidia could introduce a variant of the GeForce RTX 5080 equipped with more graphics memory in order to offer a kind of alternative to its previous top model in the GeForce series.

Specifically, there is talk of an RTX 5080 with 24 gigabytes of GDDR7, which could replace the current edition with 16 GB of VRAM. There have been similar rumors since September 2024, with talk at the time of a GeForce RTX 5080 Super with 24 GB of memory. In July 2026 it was said that Nvidia had put the introduction of the RTX 50 Super series on hold because the cost of 3 gigabit GDDR7 modules was too high.
