Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Lite coming? Samsung leak provides hope

A new manufacturing process from Samsung is currently fueling speculation about a possible Nintendo Switch 2 Lite. A more efficient chip could reduce production costs, allowing for a cheaper handheld alternative to the regular console.

Cheaper alternative in sight?

Samsung’s new manufacturing process is fueling current speculation about a possible Nintendo Switch 2 Lite. Since the regular Switch 2 is available from 495 euros after a recent price increase, a cheaper entry-level model should be attractive to many buyers. Samsung’s revamped chip production could help offset rising component costs.

The current Switch 2 uses the Nvidia T239 processor, which is based on Samsung’s 8-nanometer technology. It has eight Arm Cortex-A78C CPU cores and an Ampere graphics unit with 1536 CUDA cores. A customized chip with lower manufacturing costs could form the foundation for a pure handheld device. The more efficient manufacturing process could also allow Nintendo to install a smaller battery without severely restricting performance.

New Samsung chip brings advantages

Like the South Korean one Electronic Times reported, Samsung is expected to introduce the new 8LPU+ process in December. It will be presented on December 14th. The further developed manufacturing technology is said to offer twelve percent more performance and 15 percent lower power consumption compared to its predecessor. At the same time, the logic area should shrink by eight percent, which would reduce the production costs of the processors.

A look into the past shows that such a model would not be unreasonable for Nintendo. The first Switch Lite sold over 25 million times, accounting for almost 17 percent of total Switch sales. The pure handheld even exceeded the total sales figures of the Wii U. A Switch 2 Lite could appear at the end of 2027 if the company stays true to the time gap between the first Switch and the Switch Lite.

Possible design and EU requirements

With a Lite version, Nintendo could do without removable controllers and the ability to connect to the television. Instead, handles integrated into the sides of the housing and a smaller LCD screen would be conceivable. Not using a completely different processor would also ensure compatibility with games. Regardless of future model variants, Nintendo is currently adapting its hardware to new EU regulations on the right to repair. The standard Switch 2 model was recently redesigned to make battery replacement easier. The previous Switch Lite, however, will be removed from the European range from February 2027.
