Alibaba Decides to Close its Music Streaming App Next Month

Earlier today, Alibaba Group announced the closure of its music app Xiami next month. This move marks a step back from Alibaba’s ambition which is to push into China’s entertainment industry.

According to the reports, the online music arm of the Chinese e-commerce giant stated that the service of the music app Xiami is going to shut down due to operational adjustments. According to them, the closure will come into effect from February 5th.

They say that it is hard to say goodbye after being operational for 12 years.

The Xiami music service started back in 2013 for which Alibaba invested millions of Yuan to fight in the Chinese music market dominated by Tencent holdings. As per the Beijing-headquartered data intelligence company TalkingData, the efforts of the company did not pay off well. The app only gained 2% of China’s music streaming market behind; QQ Music, Kuwo, NetEase Cloud Music, KuGou Music, etc.

The decision to close down xiami music app came out as soon as the Chinese regulators declared that they had launched an antitrust investigation into Alibaba which also operates in other sectors like; cloud computing, artificial intelligence and financial services.

Though this doesn’t mark the end of Alibaba’s participation in the streaming market.
