AMD patent reveals Automatic Tool for RAM Overclocking

AMD has filed a patent for technology for automatic memory overclocking. The patent and resulting platform promise to tune memory modules for maximum performance in just a few clicks. AMD has filed a patent that shows promise: it involves the automatic overclocking of new AMD memories.

The U.S. Patent Office published the development on May 19, 2022, providing some exciting insights into what AMD is currently up to. As always with patent applications, it’s not clear if or when the company will even use its technology – it’s worth looking at the idea behind it anyway.

Tool tunes performance and stores overclocking profile

The process that would result from the patent could automatically test overclocked memory modules for stability. Each resulting “overclocking profile” would be unique to the system and stored locally. That reports that Toms Hardware Online Magazine after the discovery of the patent. Overclocking RAM is not new. In fact, this practice has been around for decades.

However, just like overclocking a processor, overclocking memory comes with its own risks. Data corruption or damaged memory modules due to the higher voltage and heat are not uncommon. Memory module settings can be configured based on manufacturer profiles or user input. These profiles are often created and tested with system configurations that differ from the user’s system.

Test to overload limit

The patent-pending AMD tool is said to perform all the necessary steps to overclock the installed RAM. The tool tests the overclocked memory frequency settings and makes sure they pass the memory stability test. After that, the tool tries to push the system to its limits by identifying the most aggressive timing settings to pass the test.

A profile is then created with the overclocked memory frequency and latency settings. The new profile is used to ensure that the checked settings are saved locally and loaded reliably when the system is booted.
