Apple Intelligence Gets Sued

A class action accuses Apple of misleading advertising for its AI functions. The marketing campaign around Apple Intelligence or Siri, as well as the fact that advertised features were not available at the start, is particularly criticized.

Advertising promises under the magnifying glass

Apple may have to answer in court for its marketing campaign for Apple Intelligence. A collective suit submitted to the US district court in San Jose this week accuses the technology group misleading advertising and unfair competition. The focus is particularly on applying for personalized SIRI functions.

The plaintiffs complain that Apple has advertised its devices with AI functions that were not available or only available to a limited extent at the start of sales. They see the advertising campaign for features such as Image Playground, Genoji and the personalized Siri version particularly critically. An advertising spot with actress Bella Ramsey has now been removed by the video platform YouTube. Apple Intelligence: Siri-Spot deleted by Apple with Bella Ramsey

According to information from the news portal Axios argue that the lawyers of the law firm Clarkson Law Firm – who has already filed lawsuits against Google and Openai – argue that Apple has generated excessive expectations on the market. The aim was to move customers to buy new devices and to position themselves in the competition for AI technologies.

Disclaimer not sufficient

The plaintiffs consider the information placed on the Apple website to the availability of the functions. They argue that the advertisements that have been switched since summer 2024 continue to arouse false expectations. The users had paid premium prices for devices whose advertised functions are not or can only be used to a limited extent.

The lawsuit hits Apple in a difficult phase, because the problems related to AI features cause huge unrest internally these days. According to media reports, Tim Cook Ki boss John Giannandrea is said to have released from his tasks because the CEO is said to have lost confidence in him.

Legal consequences are still open

The class action claims compensation payments for buyers of Apple devices that are compatible with Apple Intelligence. The exact height was not quantified. It is still unclear whether the lawsuit will give the lawsuit and grants the collective action status. Apple has not yet commented on this.
