Apple Releases Security Update For iOS 12.5 For Older Devices

In addition to the new iOS 14.3 update, Apple has released an update for older devices with version iOS 12.5. This is a security update that also brings optimizations for corona tracing apps.

The update is therefore recommended to all users. Apple provides older iPhones that no longer support iOS 14. These include, for example, the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6 family. Apple only releases such updates for older devices from time to time – and so far there have basically been no innovations or changes apart from eliminating security-relevant vulnerabilities. This is different now thanks to corona tracking. According to Apple, iOS 12.5 now brings the option of token exchange for older devices.

It says:

“With OS 12.5, you can opt for the COVID-19 notification system for your iPhone. System availability is subject to assistance from your local health authority. For more information, visit covid19.apple.com/contacttracing “

Otherwise, the release notes for the update only say:

• iOS 12.5 contains critical security updates and is recommended for all users.

The list with the safety instructions is not up to date, so it is currently still open which safety-related errors Apple has fixed. The update is available for the following devices: iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod touch 6th generation.

How to get the update:

The update is now available in the usual ways: Users can obtain the update using the auto-update function or initiate the update themselves in the settings. If you want to receive the update as quickly as possible, you can search for the software update in the settings and install it directly. To do this, go to Settings / General / Software update. The iOS update is displayed there; you can start and install the download directly. It is best to make a backup in advance using the Finder or iCloud.
