Apple secretly dismisses its case against the CEO of Nuvia

Gerard Williams III, the CEO of Nuvia was a former employee at Apple. Some recent pieces of information indicate that Apple quietly withdrew its case against the former executive in a filing published on Friday (via Bloomberg). Currently, Williams is serving as Senior VP of Engineering at Qualcomm.

Williams was credited with being a key contributor to the creation of Apple Silicon’s high-performance A-series and M-series semiconductors. He left the company and started his own server chip setup named Nuvia. The company accused him of stealing Apple employees for the startup while still he was serving at Apple. The legal process started in 2019.

On the other hand, Qualcomm purchased Nuvia in 2021. The Information reported in late 2021 indicates that Nuvia is one of the factors that can be contributed to the ‘brain drain’ that has occurred within the Apple silicon engineering department.

Williams filed a counterclaim against Apple in 2019 claiming that Apple was illegally employing his employees and preventing them from leaving. In the proceeding years, Apple battled to maintain the lawsuit, and a court said the case could move forward. It’s a little strange for Apple to suddenly withdraw given how aggressively the company had pushed the issue up to this point. Although the court’s request to cancel the case did not provide any details. There is a possibility of a private settlement of terms between the two parties.
