Apple To Ditch Qualcomm For In House 5G Modems BY 2023

Apple may start adapting its custom-made 5G modem chips for the 2023 iPhone. The company is already working on its in-house 5G modem. As of now, the company uses Qualcomm for the 5G modem. The new custom Apple 5G cellular modem would be faster and have lower latency.

Since Apple is developing its custom 5G cellular modems, it will stop using Qualcomm 5G modems once its modems are fully operational, expected by 2023. The company will then launch the new iPhones with its in-house 5G modem.

Qualcomm has two years to explore new markets and develop its products for other companies. In a report, a tipster said:

“As Android sales in the high-end 5G phone market are sluggish, Qualcomm will be forced to compete for more orders in the low-end market to compensate for Apple’s order loss. When the supply constraints improve, MediaTek and Qualcomm will have less bargaining power over brands, resulting in significantly higher competitive pressure in the mid to low- end market,”

A similar statement came out from Barclays analysts in March. According to a report, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies told employees that the company has kicked off the development of its ‘first internal cellular modem’.
