AMD is reportedly preparing a new X3D laptop processor for demanding gamers. The upcoming CPU is expected to have eight cores and clock at up to 5.1 GHz. The official presentation of the mobile CPU is expected in early 2027.
AMD had already brought several fresh processors with 3D V-Cache onto the market this year with the Ryzen 7 9850X3D and its new flagship, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2. In addition, another budget model is planned, the Ryzen 7 7700X3D. All three of these CPUs are desktop chips. According to current reports, the manufacturer is now also working on a new mobile processor with stacked cache for gaming laptops.
The Ryzen 7 9800HX3D will come onto the market as an eight-core CPU. An official presentation of the chip is expected at the upcoming CES in January 2027 in Las Vegas. The CPU is based on the current Zen 5 architecture and supposedly has 16 threads. The maximum clock rate should be 5.1 gigahertz. The special feature is the 96 megabyte L3 cache. The memory should consist of 32 megabytes of regular cache and a stacked block of 64 megabytes.
As a leak on Weibo (via Videocardz) claims, mass production will start in the fourth quarter of 2026. The processor was originally developed under the name Ryzen 7 9755HX3D. The renaming serves to align the name with its desktop counterpart, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. So far, AMD has offered the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D with 16 cores and 128 megabytes of cache as its flagship in the mobile segment. Such processors are usually used in expensive premium devices that cost over 2000 euros. The alleged 9800HX3D with eight cores is likely to be aimed at the mid-price segment and could compete with corresponding Intel CPUs.
AMD is increasingly focusing on expanding its portfolio with inexpensive alternatives. The company recently reissued the older 5800X3D to mark the tenth anniversary of the AM4 socket. This offered buyers a cheaper option as ongoing memory shortages drove up system prices. A 9800HX3D would continue the strategy in the mobile sector.
Official confirmation from the manufacturer is still pending. Industry experts expect starting prices starting at $1,500 (around 1,300 euros) for devices with the new chip. However, it remains to be seen how the general conditions and prices on the laptop market will develop until the expected release at CES 2027.
