Just in time for the start of the 2026 World Cup, a new player is entering the virtual field. The official FIFA football game wants to conquer living rooms with accessible control via smartphone and no additional costs.
Netflix will release the video game FIFA World Cup Launch Edition on June 11, 2026, just in time for the start of the World Cup. The title is released at the same time as the opening game of the real World Cup and is integrated into the regular subscription. Users from 20 countries, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland, have direct access to the game via the TV app. The Californian development studio Delphi Interactive redesigned the project from the ground up. It is the first major game with the world association’s official license since the long-standing partnership with publisher Electronic Arts ended in 2023.
As Netflix writes, the offer is aimed primarily at casual players. These only require a television as a screen and a smartphone that acts as a controller. Players connect their cell phone to the television in just a few seconds using a QR code. They then execute passes and shots using swipe gestures – no additional hardware is required. The system supports local multiplayer games with up to four people. All 48 participating national teams in the tournament are available to choose from. Matches take place across 16 mock stadiums, with users taking control of 1,248 licensed athletes. Complex key combinations are no longer required in favor of smooth game mechanics. This is intended to make it easier for new users in particular to get started.
One advantage for subscribers is that they do not have to make internal purchases, which is now rare for current sports games. A virtual currency that is used to improve player stats can only be earned by completing daily tasks. The provider also plans to continuously adapt the game to the real results during the tournament. This increases the relevance of the simulation during the World Cup. Due to the focus on beginners, experienced players have to accept compromises in the depth of the game. Especially when it comes to controlling via touchscreen, as this does not offer the precision of classic input devices. But professionals will undoubtedly continue to use EA; competitor Electronic Arts is also publishing its own update on the tournament for EA Sports FC 26. The company announced that it would continue to develop the software in the future. Expansions are already being planned for the upcoming Women’s World Cup to expand the portfolio. A first test run for the program has already started in Brazil. This will be followed by worldwide publication for all subscribers.
