Avatars similar to Apple Memoji are coming to Android via video calls on WhatsApp

Last year, in June, Meta reported that it was working on animated avatars for video calls on WhatsApp. As of now, reports suggest that the company is done developing the feature. Notably, the new feature is now accessible to a limited number of beta testers. Last week, WABetaInfo found traces of the new feature in the most recent WhatsApp for Android version, v2.23.19.14. Interestingly, users can now use avatars during video calls.

Users will find a notification in the app that details the new feature. It reads, “Using your avatar on calls.” Furthermore, the details show that the avatar will adopt the facial expressions and movements of the users in real time. Users have the choice to either activate or deactivate it. Thankfully, the video calls will be end-to-end encrypted with the latest feature.

Simply click on the ‘Switch to Avatar’ button presented on the notification banner. Press the’ Not now’ button if you choose to try it later. There are no details on how the feature appears in real life. Having said this, the new feature for video calls on WhatsApp should operate similarly to what it does on Instagram and Facebook.

As of now, there are no details on when the company will roll out the new feature to the stable version of the app. However, it might arrive soon given that it is in the beta testing phase. In addition to this, Meta has recently rolled out Channels and HD-quality image-sharing options to its messaging platform, WhatsApp. Furthermore, the Android version of the app will receive a significant redesign in the future.
