Nvidia could introduce a new variant of its GeForce RTX 5070 that uses a GB203 graphics unit that is more cost-effective for the company. Apparently they want to release drivers with support for the new variant tomorrow.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 currently uses the so-called GB205, at least officially. Of course, this means the actual graphics processor. The Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080, however, contain the larger and more powerful GB203. Now Nvidia should also accommodate this in the RTX 5070. With the introduction of a new variant of the GeForce RTX 5070 based on the GB203, Nvidia could primarily save costs and increase yield by using chips that do not meet the requirements of more powerful graphics card models from its line-up. In principle, the classic “binning” occurs here, in which several chips of one type are used for different end products depending on their quality.

At least the Asian X/Twitter user claims that Nvidia is planning a second variant of the GeForce RTX 5070 based on the GB203 Hongxing2020who has already attracted attention several times in the past with advance reports on announcements that were actually published later. According to the portal VideoCardz The user claims that Nvidia wants to switch to the GB203 for the GeForce RTX 5070 and will deliver a correspondingly updated driver tomorrow. For the RTX 5070, Nvidia currently uses the GB205-300 with 6144 CUDA cores, which is combined with 12 gigabytes of GDDR7 memory.

The chip is provided with a 192-bit connection, while the Total Graphics Power (TGP) is specified as 250 watts. The GB203, on the other hand, there is no exact information about the variant planned here, is a significantly larger chip that is normally installed in the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080. The GB203 has 45.6 billion transistors with a footprint of 378 square millimeters, while the GB205 has 31.1 billion transistors with an area of ​​263 square millimeters. The versions of the GB203 intended for the GeForce RTX 5070 in the new variant are likely to be chips that are defective and are not suitable for use in Nvidia’s more expensive GPU models. The prerequisite for using the GB203 as an RTX 5070 would be that a large part of the GPU chip is deactivated; after all, the graphics cards on which it is otherwise used have significantly more CUDA cores.

There is currently no evidence that an RTX 5070 equipped with GB203 could have more CUDA cores or a wider memory connection than the current edition, it is said. It wouldn’t be the first time that Nvidia has used binning to increase cost efficiency when equipping graphics cards. When and at what prices Nvidia might bring the “new” GeForce RTX 5070 onto the market is still an open question, as is the question of whether the rumor will come true.
