Coronavirus: Huge Laptop Demand Low Memory Production Increases The Prices

The enormously increased demand for PCs means that the availability of the main memory for such systems can no longer meet the demand. Manufacturers and private customers will therefore have to gradually adjust to rising prices.

As the Taiwanese industry service DigiTimes reports, the manufacturers of memory chips and modules can no longer fully meet the currently very high demand. Market observers assume that the bottlenecks in RAM chips and modules will continue in the first quarter of 2021. The increased sales of company notebooks and Chromebooks are the reason for the new problems in the memory market.

Corporate customers and the education market are causing unusually high demand due to the coronavirus

Currently, the available stocks of notebook memory are being skimmed off, especially for the construction of enterprise laptops and devices with ChromeOS, so that stocks are increasingly empty. The PC manufacturers are said to have already had extensive orders for Chromebooks that will last into the first quarter of next year.

According to the head of the memory manufacturer Adata Simon Chen, the module suppliers usually have stocks that are sufficient for a good two months for new orders. According to the Adata boss, stocks have now shrunk due to the increased demand and can no longer meet customer demand. Additional demand is not only coming from the manufacturers of enterprise devices, but also from the gaming notebook sector. Their sales are expected to be significantly higher in the coming year than sales of normal laptops for private users. At Adata, memory products for the gaming sector should account for more than 10 percent of all sales, according to Chen.

The DigiTimes analysts assume that the sales figures for notebooks in 2020 will be over 20 percent higher than in the previous year. They expect a total of around 190 million units to be sold. In the education sector, an increase in a good 32 percent to more than 42 million units is expected.
