Elon Musk announces the start date for the world’s largest semiconductor factory

Can Elon Musk overtake the established semiconductor industry with a radical concept? For the planned mega-factory called Terafab, the entrepreneur wants to ignore proven standards and build billions of AI chips extremely quickly.

Starting signal for Tesla Terafab

Elon Musk is concretizing his plans for his own semiconductor production in the USA. Tesla wants to officially present the Terafab project in seven days. The goal is to build a very large chip factory in order to reduce dependence on Asian suppliers. Tesla requires increasing computing power for autonomous driving systems, which the current market can only provide to a limited extent. The company plans to have an annual production capacity of 200 billion AI chips.

This is intended to supply hardware to millions of self-driving vehicles as well as projects from the space company SpaceX and the AI ​​company xAI. The focus is on the Tesla AI chip AI5. By manufacturing in the USA, the manufacturer wants to shorten long supply chains and reduce geopolitical risks. Musk had already emphasized the need for the project at the recent general meeting, according to the news agency Reuters reported. Existing partners would no longer be able to fully cover the increasing demand in the long term. That’s why our own factory should complement the existing giga concept of the automobile plants.

New methods in manufacturing

A technical detail of the planning is causing debate among experts. Musk questions the concept of classic clean rooms that are common in semiconductor manufacturing. According to the designs, the entire hall should not be sterile. Instead, silicon wafers should be hermetically insulated in special housings during production and protected from dust. This would theoretically allow employees to move around the hall without special protective clothing.

In this context, Musk had jokingly stated that in the future you would be able to eat a cheeseburger directly in production. Industry representatives doubt that such a concept can be implemented in the short term. Building up a corresponding supply chain usually takes many years, but Tesla is aiming for a much shorter period of time.

Strategic partnerships as an interim solution

Despite plans for its own production, Tesla continues to rely on collaborations. Until the new factory goes into operation, the company will remain dependent on established suppliers. Intel is being discussed as a possible additional partner. Musk hinted that deeper technological cooperation could make sense. There are currently no concrete contracts with Intel. Asian manufacturers such as TSMC and Samsung remain central to semiconductor supply for the time being. However, both are increasingly reaching capacity limits, which further supports the plans for their own production.
