Elon Musk’s xAI Faces Environmental Concerns Over Gas Turbines in Memphis

Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, is planning to operate 15 gas turbines continuously to power its “Colossus” supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee. According to an operating permit filed with the Shelby County Health Department, the turbines are set to run non-stop from June 2025 to June 2030.

Why does this matter? Documents obtained by The Commercial Appeal highlight significant environmental concerns surrounding the project. These turbines, which are more than 20 years old, emit hazardous air pollutants (HAP), including formaldehyde, at levels above the EPA’s 10-ton annual cap for a single source. According to the facility’s self-reported data, each turbine emits 11.51 tons of HAP annually. Learn more about the environmental concerns here.

Adding to the controversy, the turbines have reportedly been operational since summer 2024 without any public notice or regulatory oversight. Eric Hilt, a spokesperson for the Southern Environmental Law Center, criticized the lack of transparency, stating, “It’s another example of the company not being transparent with the community or with local leaders.”

The Shelby County Health Department, however, clarified that the permits for the turbines have not yet been approved and there is currently “no set timeline for approval.”

This situation underscores the growing tension between technological advancement and environmental responsibility, leaving questions about how xAI will address the community’s concerns moving forward.
