Excel for Windows gets dark mode

After several years, Microsoft’s spreadsheet program is finally getting a dark mode that deserves the name. Pictures show the design, which is currently still being tested. But it should soon be available to all users.

Insufficient dark mode

It has actually been possible to activate dark mode for Microsoft’s Office programs for a long time. While this worked well in most applications, Excel has been an exception so far. Although the menus and other user interface elements were displayed in a dark color, the cells that take up around 80 percent of the screen remained white. That’s changing now.

Excel finally goes completely dark

As Microsoft said in a blog post on its Tech community website reports that they are currently testing a new dark mode for Excel. As Redmond itself admits in the article, the feature has long been one of the most requested in the company’s feedback hub. Now the matter has finally been addressed.

The new darkened mode is intended to reduce eye strain in low light conditions and energy consumption, especially with OLED screens. In addition, Dark Mode is intended to make Excel easier to use for users with particular light sensitivity and to provide a generally visually appealing experience with a modern user interface.

Dark mode can be switched on by clicking on a new button in the “View” tab. However, the Office theme used must be compatible and set accordingly.

For now only for insiders

The new dark mode, version 2502 or newer, is currently being tested with users in the beta channel. It is not known how long it will take before the feature is rolled out to all users. However, it could soon be the case. If you don’t want to wait any longer, you can sign up for the Microsoft 365 Insider program. The company provides detailed instructions on this in another Blog entry ready. However, users should be aware that there may be problems with beta software.
