GoldenEye 007 Coming Soon to Xbox Game Pass

After more than 25 years, the N64 bestseller GoldenEye 007 not only returns to the Nintendo Switch but will also be released as a remastered version for the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. Microsoft is adding the James Bond shooter to its Xbox Game Pass “soon”. With over eight million copies sold, GoldenEye 007 is one of the best-selling games for the Nintendo 64 console.

The first-person shooter developed by the British development studio Rare was released two years after the James Bond film of the same name and, with a few exceptions, sticks to the plot of the film in its story. Above all, however, the multiplayer mode with up to four players on split-screen should be remembered by most nostalgics.

Higher resolution, improved controls, and split-screen multiplayer

After several fans and planned remastered projects failed due to license disputes, GoldenEye 007 is now celebrating its long-awaited second spring. The title will appear in classic form on the Nintendo Switch via the N64 emulator, while Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One owners can look forward to a graphically polished version in native 16:9 format with 4K resolution and customized controls for two analog sticks can look forward to.

Microsoft announces that the cult classic will be offered as part of the Xbox Game Pass, in addition to being available free to all Rare Replay bundle owners. In addition to the classic campaigns, the Xbox port of GoldenEye 007 should also have the local multiplayer mode (split screen) and the well-known cheats (eg Big Head mode). The presumably more contemporary online mode, on the other hand, will be reserved for the Nintendo Switch.

Microsoft has not yet announced an official release date for the revamped Xbox version of GoldenEye 007. According to the Redmond company, however, more information will follow “soon”. Side note: Rare (formerly Rareware) was acquired by Microsoft in 2002 after making many classics from the Donkey Kong and Banjo Kazooie universes, among others. The studio’s classics also include games like Perfect Dark, Battletoads, Viva Piñata, Killer Instinct, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day. Rare is now concentrating primarily on the further development of the pirate game Sea of Thieves and its new, Xbox-exclusive adventure Everwild.
