Google Chrome Still Leading The Internet Sphere Followed By Safari

On September 2, 2008, Google released the first version of the Chrome browser for Windows XP. Four years later, it was already the most used web browser in the world. Today, Chrome sits far above all other browsers with a market share of around 63.6 percent. Alongside the search engine and the video portal YouTube, Chrome is probably one of the US company’s biggest success stories.

Previously, the majority of Internet users surfed the Internet using Internet Explorer. But that was quite a while ago now. According to StatCounter, the heyday of Internet Explorer was history with the rise of Chrome. Microsoft reacted back in 2015 and launched a new web browser, Edge. However, it was in no way able to match the success of Internet Explorer, as a look at the Statista graphics shows.

At the beginning of March 2021, Edge (legacy) was discontinued and replaced by a new Chromium-based variant. The new Microsoft browser is based on Google Chrome and delivers similar performance data and features. The new Edge version is enjoying increasing popularity – with a global market share of around eight percent, it will displace Mozilla Firefox from third place in the browser ranking in 2021 and is still behind Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari.
