Google Messages will soon be more secure

Google has set a target for substituting regular text messages with RCS. For this reason, the tech company has taken a step forward by introducing support for end-to-end encrypted group chats on its Messaging app. The new feature covers almost a group of hundred members on your Android smartphone.

Lastly, the tech company has introduced a feature for groups having only 21 members. But as of now, the feature has been extended to a group of 100 members. In June 2021, the company introduced end-to-end encryption for 1-to-1 conversations on Google Messages app. Given this fact, when a user goes on adding more than twenty members to a specific group, the E2EE feature was turned off by design. Furthermore, there was no manual option to turn the feature on.

Basically, the lock icon on the Send button represents end-to-end encryption. If the icon vanishes, it signifies that E2EE has been turned off. However, the new updates signify that the chats will remain secure even if the members exceed 20 i.e., the new limitation is 100 members. As of now, the new feature is only presented to users in the beta channel. Expectedly, it will be introduced to more users via a stable update in the coming weeks. As soon as the feature is available, the app will have end-to-end encryption activated by default.

In addition to this, Mishaal Rahman from Esper shared a screenshot that sheds more light on the under-discussion topic. As per this image, it is clear that the Details Page of the Group will display an explanation regarding the end-to-end encryption of chats. It will be presented only when the feature is turned on. The recent step by Google is a step ahead of the company Apple which currently offers end-to-end encryption support for 32-members group chats. However, in contrast to Google, Signal is a step forward. Since it offers E2EE for groups with up to 1,000 members.
