Google: Searches Hit All-time High For ‘Insomnia’ and ‘Can’t sleep’ During COVID-19 Quarantine

The coronavirus seems to have upset the sleeping routine of tons of people around the globe — or so Google data suggests. 

According to Google Trends, searches for the terms “insomnia” and “can’t sleep” achieved an all-time high in April. The data doesn’t reveal the exact cause for the spike, but the timeline coincides with the height of the COVID-19 lockdowns worldwide.

Last month, Harvard researchers warned that the pandemic could take a toll on a person’s sleeping routine, which in turn could lead to other complications in mental health. “To many, sleepless nights can make physical and mental health problems worse,” wrote the Harvard Gazette.

Speaking from personal experience, during the lockdown many reported that their sleeping habits were suffering. A lot of people are morning birds, but the advantages of working from home make it a little too easy to go to bed late, as many don’t have to switch anymore and don’t have to spend time in commute early in the morning.

All too often, they’d get carried away till late with binging shows or gaming, which in turn meant they didn’t get a full eight hours of sleep. Like others, another mistake they made was to start napping more frequently to compensate for missed sleep, which the researchers at Harvard noted might deplete “appetite” for sleep.
