Indian IT Ministry states that smartphones must have FM Radio enabled by default

Nowadays FM Radio is no longer available on smartphones. However, it could be found on some budget or entry-level smartphones, but not on the premium and flagships. It is skipped from the features of the high-end smartphones just like the 3.5mm audio jack. Given this perspective, something interesting is coming from the Indian IT Ministry. As per the latest advisory from the ministry smartphone manufacturers are required to ensure that the FM Radio option is available on all smartphones.

According to the recommendation, all smartphones that are to be sold in India must have the FM radio turned on by default. The Indian government is taking this action in an effort to close the digital divide. It aims to provide radio services to residents of rural and remote locations. Additionally, FM radio might be useful for broadcasting emergency announcements because it is a cheap and dependable form of communication.

Brands like Samsung will be required to change their strategy

The Indian government reportedly sent a notice to the Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology (MAIT) and the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), respectively. The IT ministry issued an advisory against turning off the built-in FM radio feature on cell phones. Additionally, if an FM radio feature is missing from a smartphone, the maker must add it.

The report also includes a reference to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which has recommended enabling mobile phone radio. This will make it easier for the nation’s lower-income citizens to enjoy free entertainment as well as current emergency alerts or official statements. So, prepare to welcome FM radio on your Samsung and other phones whenever it returns.
