Intel To Open New Chip Plant In Italy

Italy also gets a new Intel factory. The recently voted-out government, together with Intel, has allegedly chosen a location for a new packaging plant for the US chip company in the northeast of the country. The location is to be closely networked with the new Intel plants planned in Magdeburg.

According to the news agency Reuters the outgoing government under Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi, together with Intel, has now found a location for the chip giant’s planned new plant. According to the report, the packaging plant will be located in the city of Vigasio in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy.

The Plant Will Assemble Components into Final SoCs

The packaging plant is used to assemble dies from new chips made at other Intel plants into “packages,” that is, to create the finished chips in which dies and other components are attached to a common substrate. Among other things, dies are to be used, which are said to come from the new German Intel works near Magdeburg.

With the choice of Vigasio as the new location, the city near Verona and the Brenner motorway has prevailed over the Piedmont region in north-western Italy. Previously, locations in Puglia, Lombardy, and Sicily were also under discussion. Intel wants to invest a total of at least 4.5 billion euros in the plant, with the Italian state taking on around 40 percent of the costs.

The construction of the Intel packaging plant in Italy is not yet a done deal. With a new, ultra-nationalist government elected yesterday in Italy, negotiations are now set to begin on how to proceed with the project under the country’s new political leadership. It also plays a role in whether the financing can take place as planned.
