iPhone Fold 2: The starting signal for development is said to have already been given

Apple’s iPhone Fold or Ultra is still a long time coming, but behind the scenes the plans are already much further ahead. Current reports now claim that the development of the direct successor foldable is already a done deal.

Foldable iPhone goes into next phase

Apple’s first foldable smartphone, which will probably be called the iPhone Ultra or iPhone Fold, is not yet available on the market and is not expected until this fall. Nevertheless, the manufacturer has apparently already released the development of the second generation. While production of the first model is starting after the hinge problems have been solved, internal eyes are already on the year 2027. As leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo (via Wccftech) reports, the successor will have a wider folding screen than the first generation, for which a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer screen are planned. At the same time, the information shows that Apple will not make any changes to the display technology and will once again rely on an OLED panel from Samsung. In order to save production costs, the primary M16 OLED and M14 indoor screens of the first generation will be used again.

The step seems logical, as the group currently has to reckon with high component prices. Twelve gigabytes of RAM and 256 gigabytes of NAND flash storage alone currently cost the company an estimated $200 (around 176 euros) to purchase. By reusing existing screen technologies, Apple could keep profit margins stable and counteract ongoing price fluctuations in the memory market.

Uncertain future for the iPhone Air

In addition to the foldable models, there is also news about the manufacturer’s flat device series. The first iPhone Air had a difficult time on the market and did not achieve satisfactory sales figures despite several price cuts. As a result, Apple reduced supplier capacity by more than 80 percent. Despite the setbacks, the company is probably sticking with an iPhone Air 2, which is planned for the first quarter of 2027. The smartphone should offer a larger display and a second rear camera. However, if the sales figures disappoint again, it could be the last extremely flat iPhone for a long time.
