Jacquard’s Connected Levi’s Wearable Technology Soon To Release In Stores

After nearly two years of rolling out Project Jacquard, the new wearable technology is coming to the markets. Levi’s and Google has successfully completed their first wearable technology called the Commuter Trucker’s jacket.

What’s this wearable technology?

This Levi’s jacket is a created with the help of Google’s Project Jacquard, which is a division of Advanced Technology And Projects (ATAP) group. This division developed conductive fibers which are smart enough to copy and transmit the hand gestures to a connected smartphone.

To understand better, take the example of Levi’s Commuter Trucker jacket. The company has woven this conductive fiber on the left sleeve. This sleeve works as if it was a smartphone’ screen. When a wearer makes some hand gesture, the conductive fibers transmit the date to the connected smartphone via a Bluetooth. This Bluetooth is attached to the left cufflink of the jacket.

The conductive fiber woven jacket is washable. However, the wearer would have to remove the Bluetooth device on the cufflink.

What are the applications of this technology?

The Commuter Trucker’s jacket, for now, works only with a number of applications. The wearer can turn on/off the music, skip a song, ask the time, read text messages, receive/end calls, and get service like Google Maps.

The jacket is expected to be available on Levi’s online store and in selected stores starting from spring this year. The introductory price of the jacket is $350, with an additional cost of shipment.

What’d be the future of wearable technology?

“Anyone on a bike knows that navigating your screen while navigating busy city streets isn’t easy – or a particularly good idea,” Paul Dillinger, the head of global product innovation for Levi Strauss & Co. said. “This jacket helps to resolve that real-world challenge by becoming the co-pilot for your life, on and off your bike.”

This Levi’s smart jacket is not only good for bike riders but is for everyone. It’s a smart move by Levi’s.

However, as the technology is rising and blending in human’s life, it’d become a threat to privacy. When a technology is starting to blend with a man’s clothing, could it not intervene his personal life?
