Russian Firm Kaspersky Lab announced on Tuesday that the company is rolling out a free version of its latest antivirus software across the world, the announcement for new free product launch came after the US suspicions that cyber security firm may fall into the hands of Russian government influence.
Eugene Kaspersky, founder of the cyber security firm confirmed in a blog post that the free antivirus would be available immediately in the United States, Canada and some Asia Pacific countries, other countries would also get the free software in the next few months.
However, the company has clearly indicated that the free version of Kaspersky antivirus is not intended to replace the paid versions, but it would provide essential basic protections such as email and the web with automatic updates which will provide strong antivirus and anti-malware protections on the internet.
Eugene said, the free software would help all the Kaspersky Lab customers by improving machine learning across all its products.
For the last 18 months the company is working on its free version, the development phase included pilot versions in several countries like Russia, Ukraine, China, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
In the US and some other countries Kaspersky has been skeptical for its ties with Russian Federal Security Service (FSB).
US has also blamed Russia for hacking the 2016’s US presidential elections. However, Moscow and Kaspersky has repeatedly denied the allegations of hacking, saying that there is no such evidence of hacking.
Another skeptical event took place last month when FBI agents in the US visited homes of Kaspersky employees in the US as part of a counterintelligence investigation. Trump administration removed Kaspersky from the list of approved vendors to sell their products to federal agencies. A bill was submitted in Congress which prohibits the department of defense to use Kaspersky products.
Whether or not true but the US allegations and skepticism towards Kaspersky makes other rethinking about using Kaspersky products. Cyber security Researchers should independently scrutinize their products and services that could be harmful to the masses if overlooked.
