Lifespan of Chromebooks support has been extended to 10 years

It’s always an unpleasant situation if you lose software support for a device that is still of some benefit to you. But if you’re a Google desktop user, there’s good news for you. As per information via the Wall Street Journal, the lifespan of Chromebooks has been extended to 10 years.

This is great news, as Chromebooks have developed and become useful over the years. If you purchased a Chromebook in the first year, you were essentially utilizing an oversized Chrome browser. There is now enough potential for productivity for people to engage in both serious work and play. Therefore, it is crucial that these devices are supported for as long as feasible.

Chromebooks will now get support for up to 10 years

This comes as a bit of a surprise considering how frequently Google updates its own Pixel smartphones. Samsung and Xiaomi today offer greater phone support than Google, but that could change soon. In any event, Google is altering the frequency of its Chromebook updates. Software upgrades for Chromebooks will be available for ten years, starting from the time of release. This policy won’t apply to Chromebooks that are already in use as of next year.

Google, though, isn’t abandoning the current models. Existing Chromebooks will be supported for at least the next two years, according to the company. They are extendable for up to five years. For instance, the corporation extended support for the Pixel Book past its original 2024 expiration date to 2027.

Depending on when it was released, a Chromebook’s lifespan may be prolonged for a different number of years. Therefore, if you’re still hanging onto your old Chromebook, you still have some time. So, if you’re looking to buy a new Chromebook, you can be confident that it will be supported for the ensuing ten years. You might want to hold off on purchasing a new Chromebook until 2024 if you want to get the most out of it.
