Microsoft adds new update lock for BSODs

A new Safeguard Hold once again prevents Windows 11 24H2 update for some users. A problematic driver that is in many known security programs can paralyze systems with blue and black screens.

New Safeguard Hold for Windows 11

Microsoft had recently lifted several update blocks for Windows 11. Among other things, the Safeguard Hold was with the ID 52796746, which prevented an update to the latest version of the operating system due to problems in gaming. Difficulties with the AutoCAD design software have recently been solved. But this progress is now overshadowed by a new lock that affects certain security software.

This time the lock concerns the Sprotect.Sys driver of Senseshield Technology, which can lead to serious problems on systems with Windows 11 24H2. For the time being, owners of affected devices are not updated to update the operating system via the Windows Update function.

Problems with security software

As on the Microsoft Learn website is documented, the driver in versions 1.0.2.372 and 1.0.3.48903 on Windows 11 24H2 can lead to complications. Affected systems no longer react and show a blues screen (BSOD) or a black screen. To avoid these errors, Microsoft implemented the Safeguard Hold with the ID 56318982. The Sprotect.Sys driver is part of an encryption solution and is used by specialized security programs and corporate solutions. Well -known applications that can install this driver are, for example, Bitdefender and Avira Antivirus.

The driver is often automatically set up on the system during the installation of various applications without users knowing from it. Senseshield Technology, the developer of the driver, offers a solution to protect software and data. The driver operates on the core level of the operating system, which gives it far -reaching authorizations, but also increases the risk of system instabilities if compatibility problems arise. Exactly this scenario is now evident in interaction with Windows 11 24H2.

Solution and recommendations

According to its own information, Microsoft is working with Senseshield Technology on a solution for the current compatibility problem. Until this is found, affected devices will not receive the Windows 11 24H2 update via the regular Windows update channel. On the Windows update page in the settings, a note is shown for home and pro user that no action is currently required.

IT administrators can use Windows Update for Business Reports to check whether your systems are affected by this lock by searching for the Safeguard ID 56318982. Microsoft expressly advises against force the update to Windows 11 24H2 manually if it is held back due to this lock.
