Microsoft Finally Fixes the Long-Standing “Update and Shutdown” Bug in Windows 11

Microsoft has now fixed a years-old bug in Windows 11. The “Update and Shutdown” option often resulted in a restart after updates instead of switching off the PC as desired. The current preview update KB5067036 now brings the solution.

With the current preview update KB5067036, Microsoft is not only rolling out the improved start menu, but unfortunately also introducing new problems such as a ‘memory leak’ in the task manager. On the other hand, however, it fixes some errors in the operating system. For example, Redmond is repairing the previously damaged media creation tool. In addition, another bug that has been causing dissatisfaction among users for years will be fixed. Many Windows users are familiar with the problem: After carrying out an update, they select the “Update and Shut Down” option in the start menu, but the next morning they are greeted by the login screen instead of a switched off computer.

The bug affected both Windows 11 and Windows 10 and was one of the most frequently reported issues in community forums and support channels. Many users mistakenly thought they had accidentally selected “Update and Restart” instead of “Update and Shutdown”.

KB5067036 solves the problem

Microsoft already delivered the defective “update and shutdown” function with Windows 10, but ignored the problem for a long time. The company confirmed in the Patch notes for the optional update KB5067036 from October 2025, the difficulties have finally been resolved.

The Update and Shutdown feature was originally introduced to save users time and streamline the update process. Instead of manually installing updates and then shutting them down separately, everything should be done in one process. Ironically, the bug caused many users to avoid this time-saving option.

Broad rollout for Patch Tuesday in November

The preview update that now resolves the issue is available for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. Users can install it in Settings via “Windows Update” > “Check for Updates” or directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog download. According to Microsoft, the fix will then be automatically distributed to all users in November via the regular cumulative update.
