Microsoft Fixes Copy Bug in Windows 11

Microsoft fixed an annoying performance issue when copying data in Windows 11 22H2. Since October 2022, users had complained that copying from a network to the local computer was taking much longer than usual. Now there is a remedy.

Initially, however, only those Windows users who are currently using the preview version of Windows 11 Version 22H2 (Build 25267) will be able to benefit from the error correction.

at the beginning of October 2022 – now something is finally happening at Microsoft. This was already indicated in December, but due to the postponed publication dates for the previews and optional updates, it took much longer before the Windows team was able to provide a solution.

Cumulative update announced

Now it says: “Fixed an issue where restartable copies of a file (e.g. using robocopy) with alternate data streams often hang in the latest Dev Channel builds. The final fix for Windows 11 22H2 production machines will be in A normal monthly cumulative update via Windows Update once validated in the Insider Builds.”

In all likelihood, that will be the case in the near future. The preview update has been available for a few days. The regular patch day and thus the probable release day to all users is March 14, 2023.

It had been shown that in Windows 11 version 22H2 there was a performance decrease when copying larger files from a remote computer to a Windows 11 machine. With large (several GB) files, the throughput when copying (reading) via SMB can drop by up to 40 percent, according to the first studies. This affects users accordingly. This problem did not occur when copying the same file to a non-22H2 machine (write). However, the actual error is not in the SMB code, as initially assumed, but in the kernel.
