Microsoft launches forced update to 24H2 for almost everyone

Microsoft has started automatically installing Windows 11 24H2 on compatible devices. To prevent this, users only have the option of pausing operating system updates completely. However, this includes security updates.

Problem child Windows 11 24H2

Microsoft made Windows 11 24H2 available for all compatible devices on October 1, 2024. One day after publication, the first update blocks for some systems followed. And in the following weeks there were a number of other compatibility problems with software and hardware.

For example, PCs with an SSD from Western Digital crashed or USB devices were no longer recognized. Some of the safeguard holds put in place for these reasons have now been lifted. But quite a few are still active. Not least for these reasons, many users probably refrained from updating to Windows 11 24H2. However, anyone who has a PC that meets the requirements for the latest version of the operating system will no longer have a choice in the future. Microsoft is now sharing this on its website Support website to Windows 11 with.

Start forced updates

An updated section has been available since yesterday in which the company explains that it will now begin installing Windows 11 24H2 automatically on users’ devices if there are no update blocks.

We have reached a new phase of phased rollout of version 24H2. Eligible devices running Home and Pro editions of Windows 11, versions 23H3 and 22H2 will be gradually updated to version 24H2. Microsoft

This “automatic update” only allows users to “select the time at which they want their device to restart or to postpone the update,” it says. Only on devices managed by an IT department does the administrator need to agree to the update.

Prevent installation

If you want to continue to operate your computer with an older version of Windows, you must take action and generally pause updates to the operating system. This can be done in the settings under “Windows Update -> Suspend Updates”. Here you can then select a period between one and five weeks during which no updates will take place. Then users will no longer receive security updates.
