Microsoft has announced in a blog post that the renaming of Visual Studio Online to Codespaces wants to ensure that the product is more than just “an editor in the browser” for programmers. The new slogan is, therefore “Codespaces” is simply the most productive place to code”.
The website now says:
“Whether you are working on a long-term project or a short-lived feature branch or just want to quickly check a pull request: With Visual Studio Codespaces you can increase your productivity thanks to a fully configured development environment that can be set up in minutes. Reference repository, then Visual Studio Codespaces sets up everything that is necessary for productive work: the source code, runtimes, linters and debuggers, extensions. “
The group published the last public preview for Visual Studio Online in November 2019. At that time, it was said that the Visual Studio development environment was to be brought to the cloud and Visual Studio would be equipped with a web-based editor and a complete development environment. Now, shortly before this year’s developer conference BUILD, Microsoft starts the official renaming and will then start the individual prices for the management options in Codespaces for BUILD.
The prices for the Linux instance types have been reduced. Codespaces also incurs a storage fee of .0088 per hour for a 64 GB SSD, which can be billed to the second. Microsoft is expected to present the new Codespaces model in detail at the developer conference. Developers with self-hosted environments can register any computer with Codespaces and link it free of charge using VS code or the browser-based editor.
