Microsoft saved half a billion dollars with AI in call centers

Microsoft records over 500 million dollars savings from the use of AI in its call centers – while the company releases thousands of employees at the same time. Of course, the technology giant is criticized for this, which should not change anything.

AI saves millions, employees lose jobs

By using artificial intelligence, Microsoft saved over $500 million in his call centers alone. Judson Althoff, Chief Commercial Officer from Microsoft, shared this number during an internal presentation. AI increases productivity in various corporate areas – from sales and customer service to software development. The savings come at a sensitive time. Microsoft recently announced the dismissal of around 9,000 employees – the third wave of discharge this year.

Around 15,000 employees were and are affected. Especially for the dismissed employees, Althoff’s statements about the enormous cost savings should have a bitter aftertaste. Infographic: How AI develops in the German economy as Bloomberg reports, Microsoft Ki not only uses in call centers, but also begins to process interactions with smaller customers through AI systems. According to Althoff, this still young initiative already generates “dozens of millions of dollars”. Another example of the increase in efficiency: AI now creates 35 percent of the code for new products and thus accelerates the market launch.

Massive investments in AI

While Microsoft is breaking down at one point, the company is investing massively in its AI infrastructure. For the 2025 financial year, the Redmond Group has planned $80 billion for the expansion of data centers. These should primarily eliminate capacity bottlenecks in AI services. Brad Smith, Microsoft’s top law, recently emphasized that the productivity gains by AI “was not a predominant factor” in the latest job cancellations.

Whether you can believe this statement is another question. The situation was also tightened by a Matt Turnbull, now deleted LinkedIn contribution, a producer at Xbox Game Studios. He had suggested to employees who felt “overwhelmed” by Microsoft’s layoffs – who also felt jobs at Xbox – to use AI tools such as Chatgpt and Copilot to deal with the emotional stress after loss of job.
