Microsoft Surface Duo 2 Scheduled To Launch In Fall

According to new reports, Microsoft is said to be working on the development of the Surface Duo 2, which is expected to be available in autumn 2021. The second generation of the dual-screen smartphone should not only be faster but also score points in the software area.

Shortly after the delayed Europe launch of the Surface Duo, rumours about a successor are growing. From the recent Windows Latest report, citing sources who are familiar with the development, about the planned release date of the Surface Duo 2. Subject to possible postponements, this should be set for autumn this year. The Redmond-based company is said to have started work on a new Android smartphone as early as the second half of 2020.

Improved hardware and focus on software optimization

In the rumour mill, which is primarily fueled by Microsoft’s job advertisements in recent months, there is talk of a stronger system-on-a-chip (SoC), a modern 5G connection and an improved camera. While the basic concept of the Surface Duo was received positively in the industry, the second generation should concentrate primarily on the software area in order to be able to offer functions that go beyond multitasking and multi-window apps. For this, Microsoft should significantly increase its Android development team.

For the average consumer, a cheaper price for the possible Surface Duo 2 should also be interesting. Microsoft’s current dual-screen smartphone has only been available in European countries for a few weeks and, despite comparatively old hardware and Google Android 10, costs at least 1500 euros. A software update to Android 11 is not targeted until summer 2021. So it remains questionable whether the Redmond-based company was able to optimize its production processes within a year to be able to target the (premium) mass market with the next smartphone.
