Microsoft Surface To Come With Intel Tiger Lake And AMD Renoir

Microsoft has been working on the next generation of the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro for a long time. Now benchmark results have surfaced that seem to confirm that Microsoft is relying on Intel’s Tiger Lake platform and AMD Ryzen chips for the new devices.

As the Indonesian benchmark specialist Apisak reports on Twitter, Geekbench recently added new models from the Microsoft Surface series. However, it is not clear which models are listed since the tested devices can only be found under the code names commonly used by Microsoft.

Intel chip with up to 4.8 gigahertz and Intel Xe graphics

Specifically, Geekbench lists a new Surface device in which the Intel Core i7-1185G7 is in use. This is Intel’s strongest “Tiger Lake” SoC for mobile systems, which comes with four x86 cores including Hyper-Threading. The base clock of the chip is 1.2 gigahertz, while burst frequencies of up to 4.8 gigahertz are possible.

It remains to be seen, however, whether Microsoft will exhaust the latitude given by Intel in terms of thermal management. With the new Intel SoC, Microsoft is also using the new Intel Xe GPU, which is part of the chip, for the first time in the Surface series. Since the Core i7-1185G7 has a maximum power dissipation of 28 watts, the device listed in Geekbench is with some probability the Surface Laptop 4 and not necessarily the Surface Pro 8.

In addition to the Intel-based model, Geekbench also lists a new device with the AMD Ryzen 7 3780U Surface Edition. The chip is already used in the Surface Laptop 3, but only in the 15-inch version. In the case of the new benchmark leak, the old CPU is mentioned, but if you take a closer look, the code name “Renoir” appears. Apparently, Microsoft wants to equip the Surface Laptop 4 with the new AMD “Renoir” chips of the Ryzen 4000 series.

There is a possibility that Microsoft will soon also use the chip in a new edition of the 13.5-inch model of the Surface Laptop, which could ensure lower entry prices. There were already rumors of this kind recently.
