Microsoft to release major 3rd party widgets update In Windows 11 22H2

New leaks show that Microsoft is working on a functional adjustment of its Windows 11 widgets. The focus should be on third-party support. The introduction could take place as part of the “Sun Valley 2” update planned for late summer. The rumors that have been circulating online for months about third-party support for Windows 11 widgets are taking shape. As the Danish leaker “FireCube” reports, developers seem to have already been informed by Microsoft about possible widget adjustments.

Accordingly, it could soon be possible to equip the web-based interface not only with information tiles from Redmond, but also with those from independent developers.

Third-party widgets even without store

Microsoft recommends that companies ideally combine their widgets with an app for their own store in order to attract more attention. However, all widgets should also be able to be installed independently, for example directly via websites. These could be in a Live Tile presentation known from Windows 10 (via MSPoweruser) integrate their content into the widget area of Windows 11.

Microsoft is also supposed to provide suggestions for installable widgets via a new “widget board”. The long-overdue support for third-party widgets should increase the attractiveness of the interface, which has been neglected by many, not only for the average user but also for companies, should enough developers step up. To use the Windows 11 widgets, it’s worth taking a look at additional tools, such as the so-called “MSEdgeRedirect”. This prevents the default opening of widget links in the Microsoft Edge browser and instead forwards them to the desired standard browser (e.g. Chrome or Firefox).

It is not yet known when the third-party widgets can be tested within a new Insider Preview Build. However, the goal of the Redmond company should be to complete the integration by the “Sun Valley 2” update (Windows 11 22H2). A release would therefore be planned for late summer or autumn.
