Microsoft Will Not Support Windows PHP Language

Microsoft has surprisingly discontinued support for the PHP programming language on Windows after over a decade. The responsible project manager confirmed that PHP 8.0, which is still being developed, will no longer be supported.

The decision comes as a bit of a surprise because until recently there were still plenty of signals from Redmond that Microsoft is working on support for PHP 8.0. It is not known what has led to a rethink – but it is clear that thanks to alternatives, there will probably not be as many people affected. In addition, PHP developer Sara Golemon has already reported and appeased that you can find a solution in the community yourself. Although she was not happy with the decision, it was an overcome able hurdle, as she explained.

The PHP versions published so far are not affected, as Dale Hirt, project manager for PHP at Microsoft, announced. In the PHP community, he has now revealed the plans of the group and given all the important details. It is now clear that there should be no support for “PHP 8.0” in any form. Hirt wrote :

“We are currently supporting PHP with development and build efforts for PHP 7.3 and PHP 7.4. We also help build PHP 7.2 on Windows when security fixes are required. But since PHP 8.0 is now in full swing, we wanted to inform the community about our current plans. We know that the current cadence is 2 years after the release for bug fixes and 1 year after for security fixes. This means that PHP 7.2 will go out of support in November. PHP 7.3 will not go into security fix mode until November. PHP 7.4 will have another year for bug fixes and then a year for security fixes. We commit to keep developing and building PHP on Windows for 7.2, 7.3, and 7.4 as long as they are officially supported. However, we will not support PHP for Windows for version 8.0 and beyond. “
