Minecraft: Official PC requirements increased enormously

After years, the official system requirements for Minecraft are noticeably increasing. According to the developers, if you want to continue playing the Java Edition smoothly, you will need four times more RAM and a somewhat more modern graphics card.

Minecraft’s RAM hunger is increasing

Just a few months ago, a streamer reached the “end” of Minecraft after 14 years. In addition, the developer studio Mojang had revised the version system. Now, for the first time in ages, the official system requirements for the PC version of the Pixel game are increasing. According to the developers, if you want to continue to experience the sandbox title in the classic Java Edition with smooth frame rates, you will now need modern hardware.

This affects both the RAM and the main processor. In the past, two gigabytes of RAM and integrated graphics solutions were enough to create blocky worlds. However, the game, developed by Markus Persson in 2009, has grown enormously over the years through continuous updates. The old information no longer reflects today’s reality. A technical change from the OpenGL programming interface to Vulkan is also being planned.

New PC specifications

Like Mojang in one Blog post reported, the adjustment is intended to provide clearer guidance for players. Eight gigabytes of RAM are now required for the minimum settings at a resolution of 1080p and 30 frames per second. That’s four times the previous minimum. Additionally, players now need a quad-core processor. On top of that, a graphics card with at least two gigabytes of video memory is absolutely necessary.

According to the new guidelines, if you want to enjoy the game at 60 frames per second and high details, you must have 16 gigabytes of RAM available. So far it was four gigabytes. Models such as the Intel Core i5 12400 or the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 are mentioned as processors. When it comes to the graphics card, the choice falls on models in the performance class of an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060.

Impact on old systems

Increasing specifications has various consequences for users. One advantage is that developers are no longer slowed down by outdated technology and can integrate modern functions. However, users with old computers may need to upgrade hardware, which can be expensive given current memory prices. As an alternative, weak systems can switch to the more resource-efficient Bedrock Edition, but there are no certain modifications. The title can of course still be started on devices that are below the new minimum requirements. However, performance and visual quality are no longer guaranteed on such computers. In the long term, there is a risk that the game will completely refuse to work on very outdated hardware.

The Block Adventure was originally based entirely on Java code, which historically led to heavy memory usage. In contrast to modern engines, a lot of data has to be continuously loaded in the background when generating the worlds. Anyone who is forced to upgrade their computer does not necessarily have to invest in high-priced components. Compared to current blockbuster titles, Minecraft remains relatively frugal. A used PC that meets the new requirements is available on the market for just a few hundred euros.
