Qualcomm is raising prices – cell phones, wearables, laptops will soon be even more expensive

Manufacturer Qualcomm is planning significant price increases for its Snapdragon chips. From September onwards, costs will rise by a double-digit percentage. For end consumers, this will soon mean noticeably more expensive smartphones, laptops and wearables.

Cost explosion for processors

Qualcomm will raise the prices for its semiconductors by a double-digit percentage from September 2026. The manufacturer is reacting to ongoing bottlenecks in the supply chain and increased production costs. Buyers of many technical products have to be prepared for even higher purchase costs. The reason for the price adjustment is of course the massive expansion of data centers for artificial intelligence. The boom is further drastically reducing global production capacity for memory chips and processors. Contract manufacturer TSMC, which produces for Qualcomm and Apple, among others, is therefore reaching its capacity limits. This continues to drive up the prices of basic components.

As Bloomberg reports, Qualcomm informed its customers of the price increase in a letter. According to the document, the company has exhausted all options to cover the increased supplier costs itself. Attempts to obtain alternative components from other sources were unsuccessful.

Impact on the technology market

The price increase affects a wide range of consumer electronics that rely on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips. These primarily include:

  • Premium smartphones from manufacturers like Samsung or Xiaomi
  • Smart glasses and virtual reality headsets
  • Current smartwatches and other wearables
  • New Windows computers with ARM architecture
  • Prices have already risen in the past. The Snapdragon 8 Elite has already recorded a 30 percent increase over its predecessor. For the next generation, Qualcomm is now working on a more cost-effective variant to counteract the enormous price pressure on the market. Since manufacturers often place their chip orders well in advance, the passing on of costs to the consumer is usually delayed by a few months.

    Reactions on the stock market

While end customers have to expect disadvantages due to higher prices, investors reacted positively to the announcement. Qualcomm shares recovered from an initial low and closed at $168.49 (around 148 euros) after the plans were announced. Investors expect the move to increase sales for the group. Observers assume that the situation on the semiconductor market will not ease any time soon. TSMC is also planning further price adjustments of up to ten percent for most manufacturing processes next year. This is likely to keep cost pressure on the entire electronics industry high. The Android smartphones that will come onto the market next year will be particularly affected by the current price increases.
