New Windows update Fixes VPN problems

Microsoft is now rolling out various “Out of Band” updates to fix the VPN connection failures (L2TP) and other bugs that arose during Patch Day on January 11th. These are available for many Windows 11 and Windows 10 versions, among others. After installing the recently made available Patch Day updates KB5009543 (Windows 10) and KB5009566 (Windows 11), there were problems establishing L2TP VPN connections due to an unspecified processing error.

Documented in the event log of affected users with error code 789, the bug within Windows’ own VPN client is to be fixed with the recently released updates. The same applies to a bug that sporadically puts Windows Server systems in boot loops. Overview of “Out of Band” updates for Windows 10 / 11 / Server etc.

Problems and solutions for Windows systems

In the official patch notes, which are almost identical in terms of the updates available immediately, Microsoft says the following. VPN issue: “Resolves a known issue that may cause IP Security (IPSEC) connections with a Vendor ID to fail. VPN connections using Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) or IP Security Internet Key Exchange ( IPSEC IKE) may also be affected.”

Windows Server Boot Loops: “Fixes a known issue that may cause Windows servers to restart unexpectedly after installing the January 11, 2022 update on domain controllers (DCs).” ReFS File System: “Resolves an issue that may prevent removable media formatted with the Resilient File System (ReFS) from being fixed or cause the removable media to mount in RAW file format.

This issue occurs after installing the January 11, 2022 updates Windows on.” LDAP Fix: “Resolves an issue that prevents Active Directory (AD) attributes from being properly written in a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) change operation when you make multiple attribute changes.” All updates can now be downloaded via the Windows Update function. Users of Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012, on the other hand, have to go to the Microsoft update catalog and can use the patches KB5010794 other KB5010797 use as clues.
