Ninja Gaiden 4 Surprise Reveal Highlights Xbox Developer_Direct January 2025

The recent Xbox Developer_Direct presentation in January 2025 brought plenty of exciting reveals, from the Southern Gothic vibes of South of Midnight to the blood-pumping action of DOOM: The Dark Ages. But the biggest surprise? The reveal of Ninja Gaiden 4 — a long-awaited sequel that’s finally happening after 12 years.

The announcement came with insight from Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, who shared more about how this collaboration came to life during an interview on the Gamertag Radio podcast. Spencer explained that discussions around a new Ninja Gaiden game began six or seven years ago when the Xbox team reached out to Japanese developers with a simple “What if?” Those conversations, paired with Xbox’s effort to rebuild strong relationships with Japanese publishers, have finally paid off.

“I feel great about our relationships with the publishers in Japan,” Spencer said, emphasizing that the Xbox team has spent years listening to ensure healthier partnerships with Japanese developers. “It’s what the Xbox community deserves, and I want to stay focused on that.”

Xbox and Japanese Game Support

Xbox has made major strides in earning Japanese developer support over the past few years, bringing major franchises like Sega’s Like a Dragon and Persona to the platform. Microsoft also helped market Sega and Atlus’ award-nominated RPG Metaphor ReFantazio in 2024.

Even longtime PlayStation exclusives are finding their way to Xbox, such as Genshin Impact, which launched on Xbox in 2024. The reveal of Ninja Gaiden 4 is Xbox’s next big step toward solidifying its relationship with Japanese developers.

Ninja Gaiden 4: A Sequel 12 Years in the Making

Ninja Gaiden 4 is set to arrive in Fall 2025, marking the first mainline entry in the series since Ninja Gaiden 3 in 2012. The game is a collaboration between Team Ninja, PlatinumGames, and Xbox Game Studios Publishing.

Fans of the franchise will see the return of series legend Ryu Hayabusa as a playable character, but the spotlight is on Yakumo, a brand-new protagonist with a unique ability called Bloodbinding. Yakumo uses this technique to power up his weapons, taking on foes like cybernetic ninjas and even more dangerous enemies.

In an exciting twist, Yakumo’s mission directly pits him against Ryu Hayabusa, promising an epic showdown that longtime fans won’t want to miss.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black Remake

As part of the presentation, Team Ninja also dropped a surprise remake of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. This Unreal Engine 5-powered update of the 2008 classic comes with stunning visual upgrades and features from the Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma version, available now.

Coming Fall 2025

Ninja Gaiden 4 launches in Fall 2025 for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5. As an Xbox-published title, the game will also be available on day one through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.

With its fresh protagonist, high-octane gameplay, and the return of Ryu Hayabusa, Ninja Gaiden 4 is shaping up to be worth the wait. Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to launch!
