Search engines are the gateway to the Internet. OpenAI now wants to compete with Google with its own AI search. Today the service was officially launched and is also available directly in ChatGPT. However, not for all users of the AI chatbot. OpenAI
As early as May of this year, there were rumors that OpenAI’s artificial intelligence search engine would soon be launched. However, nothing came of it at first. After all, ChatGPT has been integrated into other search services like Bing for some time.
Today the AI company around CEO Sam Altman has one Contribution announced the launch of its own search engine on its website. It now provides users with real-time information in response to their questions. So far, the AI only included information up to 2021 or 2023 in its answers.
The service is not a standalone product, but is integrated into ChatGPT. Depending on the user’s request, the tool decides whether to use the new search function to create an answer. Users can also activate the web search manually at any time by clicking on a corresponding button. It is available on all platforms.
This includes iOS and Android on mobile devices, as well as Windows and macOS on desktop computers. GPT-4o is used to generate the answers. The sources of the information used for the answers as well as links to the original content should be presented in a visible and easily accessible manner for users.
However, the function is initially only available to paying ChatGPT Plus and Team users as well as people on the SearchGPT waiting list. Enterprise and education users will gain access to AI search in the next few weeks. Anyone who uses the free version of ChatGPT will only gain access in “the coming months”.
OpenAI is thus putting pressure on established companies in the search engine market. Google has long placed AI summaries in its search results to quickly answer users’ questions. However, there had already been incidents in which the function provided incorrect and dangerous answers. With OpenAI’s new search, it will be exciting to see whether Google loses significant share after decades of market dominance.
